Issues

1.    The Economy

This recession has had a devastating impact on our community.

But Maggie Hart Stebbins is taking the steps necessary to rebuild our economy and improve our future.

Getting Our Money’s Worth

We must hold corporations accountable when they take public dollars.

Economic incentives must meet strict standards that guarantee local job creation and economic stability, AND provide a level playing field for all applicants.

Sustainable Economic Development

Let’s not just look outside Bernalillo County for job creation opportunities. Instead, we should help our local small businesses right here in Albuquerque.

Maggie has the right plan to help revive our economy:

  • Spend more resources helping local small businesses
  • Invest in infrastructure for our 21st Century economy.
  • Create incentives for development of renewable energy technologies
  • Partner with our National Laboratories to build business based on high-tech innovation
  • 2. Restoring Confidence In Government

Fraud and abuse jeopardize our recovery from this recession. We must build a stronger, healthier, and safer Bernalillo County for now and for the future.

Maggie Hart Stebbins authored Bernalillo County’s comprehensive new Ethics Ordinance, which promotes open and transparent county governent and holds the corrupt responsible. The new law:

    • Makes reporting report fraud and abuse easier for residents
    • Bans retaliation against whistle-blowers
    • Requires independent investigations of all ethics complaints
    • Establishes fines of up to $1,000 for violating county ethics laws

The new law protects taxpayers by ensuring that County funds are being spent appropriately.

    3.    Public Safety

We must continue to improve public safety in Bernalillo County.

    Reduce Drunk Driving

Many families continue to be struck by the senseless tragedy that results from drinking and driving.

To reduce drunk driving, Maggie Hart Stebbins worked with local businesses to expand the county’s Safe Ride program.

Safe Ride made an impact — DWI arrests on Thanksgiving eve dropped nearly 60 percent.

    Fix County Jail Problems

Bernalillo County taxpayers spend millions of dollars each year on the local jail.

Maggie Hart Stebbins has worked with jail staff, community leaders, and service providers to help break the cycle of crime and incarceration.

And after learning that the jail was releasing female inmates during the middle of the night in Downtown Albuquerque, Maggie insisted on providing temporary shelter, telephone calls, and security for newly released inmates.

Maggie also has supported expansion of substance abuse treatment options and work opportunities for non-violent offenders.

Greater availability of treatment options is crucial to developing a better – and more cost-effective – approach to reducing crime.
